What DNS does
DNS translates domain names into IP addresses. When you visit a site, your device usually asks a resolver where that domain points before the connection begins.
What DNS over HTTPS changes
DNS over HTTPS sends DNS queries through an encrypted HTTPS connection to a resolver. This can reduce exposure on some networks, but it does not hide every part of the connection path.
What a DNS leak means
A DNS leak happens when DNS requests go to an unexpected resolver, often outside a VPN tunnel. Your visible IP might show the VPN while DNS still goes to your ISP resolver.
How to check your setup
After enabling a VPN or changing DNS settings, compare your visible IP, DNS resolver, IPv6 behavior, and WebRTC results. Look for mismatched signals.
